How to become a MADGE and stand up for our health and that of our kids:

Think of all the groups you are involved with: mothers' group, playgroup, kinder, school, friends, family, bookgroups, singing groups, sporting teams, work etc. No doubt the issue of food, kids and health comes up.

Find others concerned about the safety and quality of our food, print the form letter below or better still write your own, get everyone to sign and send it to your local state politician.

It's as simple as that.

1. Write to your state politician

Remember letters are:

  • More effective if they are hand written
  • Paid more attention to if they are polite and thoughtful
  • Very influential - if a politician receives enough letters, usually 10, then they can raise the issue with their party as it shows that the electorate is concerned.
  • The best way to protect your food supply from GE

2. Arrange a meeting with your state politician

Politicians are elected by us and therefore they want to be contacted about the issues that are important to us and that could affect their re-election.

They like to be seen kissing babies and what could be better than being invited to a mothers' group, kinder, creche, school etc?

You could call it a MAdGE meeting, (even if it is organised by non-mothers - really the more groups and the more diverse they are the better).

Request them to support MAdGE by:

  1. Reinstating the ban on GE canola in Victoria
  2. Monitor and enforce labelling of all GE foods
  3. Providing full independent scientific testing on the health effects of GE foods and crops.

Ask them:

  • Are you with MadGE? If so CONGRATULATE them. Now you have a great opportunity to raise ideas and discuss food issues.
  • Are you anti-MadGE? If so, ask them to EXPLAIN why they supported lifting the ban on growing GE canola in Victoria.
  • Are you unsure? If so INVITE them to discuss the issue. We will help you prepare if you wish. Suggest they organise a public meeting where pro and anti-GE proponents can discuss the issue.

Take notes of the meeting so that you can remember what was discussed.

Take a picture of the meeting and upload it to our gallery.

3. Contact your council

  • Ask them about their GE policy
  • Ask them to develop a GE free policy for creches, kinders, aged care facilities, council catering and canteens etc.

4. Contact your local shops and supermarkets

Ask them to stock GE free products and create GE free aisles for easy shopping. Visit our Food Detective section to find out more.

5. Download GE free food guide by Greenpeace

Download the True Food Guide here and support non-GE food

6. Talk to your friends and family

One of the easiest and most effective ways to put pressure on our politicians to act on GM food is to spread the word, so:

Join us on Facebook.
Become a Fan of MAdGE on Facebook and share with all your Facebook Friends.  Help us spread the word and get more mums on board.
